The German landscape painter Joseph Jansen, also known as Johann Joseph Jansen, was born in Aachen in 1829 and died in Düsseldorf in 1905. He settled in Düsseldorf at the age of seventeen, studied at the Prussian Royal Academy of Fine Arts and attended Johann Wilhelm Schirmer’s landscape class from 1847 to 1850. His study trips first took him to the regions of the Rhine and Moselle, then to the Swiss and Bavarian Alps. He exhibited at various German galleries from 1850, took part in exhibitions at the Berlin Academy from 1870 and exhibited in Vienna in 1872.
The titles of his paintings evoke these regions and their sites: Schloss Oberhofen am Thunersee, dated around 1860, Gebirgssee (1870) and Motiv aus Meiringen (1872) are followed, among the works cited, by Motiv aus dem Chamonix-Tal (1890), Wasserfall in alpiner Landschaft (1898) and Blick auf den Vierwaldstättersee (1900). In 1880, Emperor William I acquired his painting Oeschinensee im Berner Oberland. A member of the artists’ association Malkasten, Jansen married the landscape painter Luise Siebke (1835–1912), who had first been his pupil.
