Alexandra Exter was born in Białystok in 1882 and trained in Kyiv. From 1908, visits to Paris brought her into contact with Picasso, Léger and cubist and futurist circles. She circulated their experiments between Paris, Kyiv and Moscow while retaining a strong commitment to colour. After 1914, she developed nonfigurative compositions and participated in major exhibitions of the avant-garde.
From 1916, her collaboration with theatre director Alexander Tairov transformed the conception of stage sets, costumes and lighting, notably for Salomé. Geometrical forms became active components of the theatrical space. Settling in France in 1924, she taught in Léger's studio and also returned to still-life painting. She died in Fontenay-aux-Roses in 1949, leaving a body of work that connects painterly experimentation with a comprehensive rethinking of theatrical design.
This profile brings together identity references for Aleksandra Ekster and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
