Johannes Borman was a Dutch still-life painter active in Leiden and Amsterdam around the middle of the seventeenth century. The precise dates of his life remain uncertain, but his activity is documented during the 1650s. His work favours fruit, precious vessels and table arrangements, displayed on ledges or gathered into garlands.
The Rijksmuseum's Festoon of Fruits, dated around 1653–1658, combines grapes, apricots, oranges and peaches with a butterfly and a wasp. This repertoire offers opportunities for contrasting textures and colours. Other compositions position fruit beside an elaborate glass or a small casket. These objects form a recognisable pictorial vocabulary in which decorative arrangement and the observation of natural produce reinforce one another, jointly shaping the structure of his still lifes.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Borman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
