Hendrick de Clerck was a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in Brussels, where he supplied altarpieces for churches following the destruction of the iconoclastic period. A court painter, he also treated mythological and allegorical subjects, extending the language of Mannerism into the seventeenth century. In collaborations with landscape specialists, notably Denis van Alsloot, he contributed the figures, combining different artists’ skills within a single composition.
The Contest between Apollo and Pan in the Rijksmuseum, an oil painting on copper dated around 1600–1615, is attributed to both artists. Apollo plays a bowed string instrument before the judge Tmolus, while Midas appears with donkey’s ears. The same museum holds Susanna and the Elders, catalogued between 1620 and 1630. Together these subjects demonstrate the coexistence of sacred narrative and classical fable in his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Hendrick de Clerck and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
