Moritz Stifter

Born : 1857Died : 1905

Moritz Stifter (1857–1905) was an Austrian painter and a nephew of the writer and painter Adalbert Stifter. The son of an engineer, he initially pursued a military career before choosing painting. In 1882 he entered the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and trained under Carl von Piloty. From 1899 he worked in Haag near Neulengbach, west of Vienna.

His work favoured female figures, interior and studio scenes, alongside Orientalist and allegorical subjects. Elaborate clothing, fabrics and contrasts of light contribute to the staging of his compositions. His vision of the East was frequently an imaginative construction. Such pictures belong to the genre painting popular with Munich’s clientele towards the end of the nineteenth century, which occupied much of his career.

This profile brings together identity references for Moritz Stifter and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
