Rosalba Carriera was born in Venice in 1673 and died in 1757. She established pastel as a portrait medium sought after across Europe. Beginning with miniatures, she attracted an international clientele to her Venetian studio. Her Paris visit of 1720–21 brought commissions to portray the young Louis XV and admission to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
In Portrait of a Man, probably from the 1720s at the National Gallery, a white wig frames a delicately coloured face; the sitter remains unidentified. Gustavus Hamilton in Masquerade Costume, of 1730–31 at the Metropolitan Museum, evokes the Venetian Carnival through its mask, veil and cape. Her Self Portrait as Winter, of 1731 in Dresden, instead combines her own likeness with an allegorical representation of the season.
This profile brings together identity references for Rosalba Carriera and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
