Oscar Gauthier (1921–2009), a French painter born in Fours, in the Nièvre, and who died in Nevers, developed an abstract body of work attentive to the rhythms and phenomena of nature. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, he completed his training at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he studied, among others, under Othon Friesz. In 1952, he opened the Galerie 34, rue du Four, in Paris. A stay in the United States introduced him to American Abstract Expressionism and the explorations of the New York art scene.
From the 1960s onwards, his research turned towards a renewed dialogue with nature. Without returning to figuration, his painting moved closer to lyrical landscape painting: natural rhythms, the vibrations of light and atmospheric phenomena inspired his compositions. Over the decades, his abstraction became freer, while the pictorial material, worked in thick layers, became an essential element of the composition. In 2008, a retrospective was devoted to him at the Galerie Arnoux. Works by Gauthier are listed in the collections of the Centre national des arts plastiques and the Fonds national d’art contemporain, as well as at the Centre Pompidou.
