Gustav Jacob Canton

Born : 1813Died : 1885

The German painter Gustav Jacob Canton, born in Mainz on 7 April 1813 and died in Munich on 20 March 1885, pursued a career combining training in landscape painting with work as an illustrator.

He received his first lessons in painting and drawing from Nikolaus Müller and Louis Catoir. Settling in Munich in 1832, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts until 1836, then went to Düsseldorf in 1837 to further his training in landscape painting. From 1838 to 1847, he studied there under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Andreas Achenbach and Carl Friedrich Lessing. His study trips took him to the Bavarian mountains, Tyrol and Switzerland. In 1844, he co-founded the Crignic group with six other artists; it is described as democratic and academic. Regarded as a precursor to Malkasten, founded in 1848, Crignic preceded Canton’s membership of the latter.

In 1851, his work was presented at the Düsseldorf Gallery in New York. In the 1850s, he illustrated several books, including Der Thiergarten, which he wrote himself. His illustrations for The Story of Reynard the Fox, published in London from 1852 by David Vedder, helped make him known. From 1853 to 1857, he travelled in Italy, the south of France and the Pyrenees, and stayed in Rome from 1855 to October 1857.
