Louis Henry Weston Klingender

Born : 1861Died : 1950

Born in Liverpool in 1861, Louis Henry Weston Klingender was a British animal painter whose career unfolded mainly in Germany. A biographical notice states that he came from a family of Huguenot descent. Around 1881, he enrolled at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts and studied there under Carl Friedrich Deiker, also named Karl Friedrich in another notice.

After his marriage to Florence Hoette in 1894, the couple settled in Kronberg. Klingender exhibited regularly at the Academy in Berlin, then established his studio in Goslar, where he took up residence in 1902 in the museum building on Breite Strasse. A biographical notice states that he held annual exhibitions there. In Goslar, he also devoted a significant part of his time to developing the museum, particularly its geology and natural history collections. At the beginning of the First World War, considered a potential spy, he was interned at Ruhleben, near Berlin.

Descriptions of several paintings provide concrete indications of his animal subjects: Two dachshunds in a landscape, a signed oil on canvas dated 1894, depicts two dachshunds in a landscape; Young Roebuck is described as a signed oil on canvas dated 1906; Hirsch mit Hirschkühen, an oil on canvas measuring 56.3 × 81.5 cm, depicts a stag and hinds. A biographical notice places his work in a period when large “romantic” animal paintings had fallen out of fashion.
