The French painter Jean Dufy, born in Le Havre and deceased in Boussay, pursued a career that brought painting together with the decorative arts. After working for an import house dealing in overseas goods and then as a secretary aboard the ocean liner La Savoie, he settled in Paris at the end of his military service, which he completed from 1910 to 1912. In the capital, he met, among others, André Derain, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Émile Othon Friesz, Albert Marquet and Guillaume Apollinaire. His first watercolours were exhibited at Berthe Weill’s gallery in 1914.

In 1920, having settled on Square Caulaincourt, he worked with his brother Raoul on the decorations for the Bœuf sur le toit. From 1916 to 1934, he also designed models for Théodore Haviland porcelain in Limoges; his creations earned him a gold medal at the 1925 Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes. The brothers’ collaboration continued for the 1937 World’s Fair: Jean helped Raoul create La Fée Électricité, a large-scale mural intended for the electricity pavilion.

Between 1939 and 1948, his stays in Limousin and Touraine informed, among other works, landscapes and village scenes. Later, his travels took him mainly around Europe and to North Africa. His works were shown at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1920, 1923, 1924, 1927 and 1932, then at the Galerie Bing & Cie in 1929, the Balzac Galleries in New York in 1930 and the Perls Galleries in 1938. In 2011, the Musée Marmottan Monet presented the exhibition « Raoul et Jean Dufy – Complicité et Rupture » in Paris. A watercolour, L’Hôtel Welcome à Villefranche-sur-Mer, is also included in the first volume of Jacques Bailly’s catalogue raisonné, published in 2002.
