Samuel Bough, also known as Sam Bough, was a British artist born in Carlisle in 1822 and died in 1878. Self-taught, he first worked as a scene painter at the Theatre Royal in Manchester. After settling in Glasgow, he continued painting in the evenings alongside his employment at the New Princes Theatre, before being able to devote himself entirely to painting. By the time he settled in Edinburgh again, he had already established himself as a landscape painter.
His work includes oil paintings and watercolours, and encompasses both urban and rural landscapes. Bough was interested in the diversity of atmospheric conditions, from bright days to storms; the spontaneity and freedom of his technique accompany his attention to the passing effects of the sky, particularly clouds and changes in the weather. Harbours and coastal towns recur regularly in his work, with a particular preference for Newhaven Harbour. He also paints the hunting forest of Cadzow, near Hamilton, and produces a series of Italian views. A work entitled Newhaven Harbour on the Firth of Forth is described as executed in pencil and watercolour, with white highlights; it bears the signature “Sam Bough” at the bottom left.
