SEO, born in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1977, is an artist based in Berlin. She studied at Chosun University from 1996 to 2000, receiving training that included traditional ink painting. She subsequently joined Georg Baselitz’s class at Berlin’s University of the Arts and became his master student in 2003–2004. Her education connects Korean traditions with German artistic teaching.
Her compositions combine painting with collages made from numerous paper fragments, arranged into landscapes, figures and architectural spaces. Motifs emerge through layering, moving between the continuity of the image and the fragmentation of its surface. She also develops installations that extend her practice into physical space. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz and the Today Art Museum in Beijing.
