Giacinto Gigante was born in Naples in 1806 and died in 1876. He began as a cartographical draughtsman before developing his landscape painting. During his stay in Rome in 1826, he made small oil views. Trained from nature by Hüber and subsequently close to Pitloo, he belonged to the Posillipo School and made watercolour a favoured means of capturing light.
Scene on the Gulf of Naples, from the 1840s, at the Morgan uses brown watercolour over black chalk. In the Monastery of Santa Maria di Donnaregina of 1865, at Capodimonte, pencil combines with lead white and watercolour on ivory paper. These architectural records also preserve the historical appearance of Neapolitan monuments and urban spaces.
This profile brings together identity references for Giacinto Gigante and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
