Caspar Netscher grew up in Arnhem and trained with Gerard ter Borch in Deventer. Following a stay in France and his marriage to Margaretha Godijn in Bordeaux in 1659, he settled in The Hague in 1662. He joined the Pictura confraternity that year and remained in the city until his death in 1684. His career encompassed genre scenes, portraits and other figure compositions.
In his early paintings, Netscher depicted everyday activities with particular attention to fabrics and gestures. His delicate rendering of textures, especially silk, subsequently contributed to the success of his portraits among wealthy patrons. His surviving drawings include records of completed paintings, sometimes annotated with prices and clients' names. These sheets illuminate the practical organisation of a studio in which elegant figures were grounded in close observation.
This profile brings together identity references for Caspar Netscher and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
