Born in Haarlem in 1621, Isaac van Ostade learned painting from his brother Adriaen. He remained in the town until his death in 1649, devoting his short career to landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Inns, roads and rural activities provide recurring settings for his compositions.
The Outskirts of a Village, with a Horseman, painted in the 1640s and held by the National Gallery, brings together resting travellers, conversations and dogs before an ageing house. Light picks out brick, wood and metal. In The Halt at the Inn in Washington, dated 1645, arriving travellers enliven the street. The buildings appear more dilapidated than in his drawings from life. This emphasis on picturesque decay transforms direct observation into a carefully constructed pictorial scene.
This profile brings together identity references for Isaac van Ostade and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
