The Flemish painter and printmaker Lucas Franchoys the Younger, also known as Lucas Franchoys II, was born and died in Mechelen, in 1616 and 1681. The son of the painter Lucas Franchoys the Elder, he studied painting with his father alongside his brother Peter, who was also a painter. In 1640, the two brothers travelled to Antwerp and joined the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, where they remained until the master’s death; Lucas then returned to Mechelen in 1654.
Religious commissions played an important role in his activity: churches, monasteries and convents commissioned altarpieces and other works for their places of worship. These included numerous monumental altarpieces for churches in Tournai and Mechelen. He also painted portraits, including one of Archbishop Alphonse de Bergues. Sebastiaen van Aken and Pierre Simon Verlinden were among his pupils. Around fifty works are attributed to him.
The Adoration of the Shepherds is held at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds a painting, drawings and etchings by or after Lucas Franchoys II. At the Musée Calvet in Avignon, a Portrait of a Cleric is attributed to him. The National Museum in Warsaw also holds a Portrait of a Young Man. An etching entitled Head of an Old Man is listed under his name.
