Rudolf Ribarz (1848–1904), trained in Vienna under Albert Zimmermann, studies the painting of the Barbizon school. Based in Paris for many years, he depicts sites in France and the Netherlands. His restricted palette gives these landscapes a poetic mood.
At the Leopold Museum, By the Water, an oil on canvas of around 1880, contrasts brown and greenish areas with bright reflections before a farmstead and tall trees. Boats at the Coast, also dated around 1880 in the same collection, addresses the shoreline in oil on canvas. A Study of a Tree with a Seated Figure, dated 22 August 1902 at the Albertina, preserves pencil work in a sketchbook. These works connect the landscape’s coloured construction with observation through drawing.
