Rudolf Jordan (1810–1887), born in Berlin and deceased in Düsseldorf, trained with Karl Wilhelm Wach before continuing his studies at Düsseldorf’s academy. A genre painter, draughtsman and illustrator, he took a particular interest in communities along the North Sea coast. Travels in France, Belgium and the Netherlands broadened his repertoire.
Marriage Proposal on Helgoland, his first painting produced at the Düsseldorf academy, illustrates his interest in human relationships and local customs. Fishermen’s lives, families and everyday events remained important subjects throughout his work. In 1868, Soup Day in a French Monastery appeared at Berlin’s academic exhibition. This scene of soup distribution extends his observation of communities and their practices into another social and geographical setting.
This profile brings together identity references for Rudolf Jordan and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
