Roger Edgar Gillet

Born : 1924Died : 2004Documented citizenships : France

The French painter and printmaker Roger-Edgar Gillet develops his work from an early abstract period towards figuration; in the mid-1960s, humanity becomes the central subject of his work. Born in Paris in 1924 and died in Saint-Suliac in 2004, he first works as a decorator before devoting himself to painting. From 1946 to 1948, he teaches at the Académie Julian.

His figurative work unfolds notably in series, including Les Poux, Les Juges, Les Bigotes, Marilyn, Les Musiciens and Les Mutants. He also addresses landscape in the series Villes and Marines. In 1953, he creates four compositions and an original lithograph for Meurtre sacral by Emmanuel Looten, published by Éditions Michel Tapié in an edition of 150 numbered copies. A member of the selection committee of the Salon de mai, he travels to Cuba in 1967 and takes part in the creation of a collective mural in Havana.

His first solo exhibition takes place in 1953 at Galerie Craven in Paris. He joins Galerie de France in 1957 and subsequently presents three solo exhibitions there, in 1959, 1961 and 1963. He receives the prix Fénéon in 1954, followed by the prix Catherwood in 1955. A retrospective of his work is presented at the CNAP in Paris in 1987. In 1999, the Musée du Palais Synodal in Sens dedicates the exhibition Roger-Edgar Gillet, Cinquante ans de peinture to him. His works are held in public collections in France, notably at the Musée national d’Art moderne – Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the fine arts museums of Lyon, Rennes and Rouen. They are also held at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Oslo Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. Gillet stops painting in 1998.
