Georg Friedrich Kersting

Georg Friedrich Kersting studied in Copenhagen before living in Dresden from 1808, where he became friends with Caspar David Friedrich. He later worked at the Meissen porcelain manufactory. His interiors focus on quiet, absorbed activities. In the Berlin version of Friedrich in His Studio, dating from about 1812, the painter stands with his palette before the back of a painting set on an easel.

Young Woman Sewing by Lamplight, dated 1823 in Munich, directs illumination towards the working hands within a room with green walls. Kersting also depicted Hermann Kersting as a Landscape Painter in 1843. This small oil painting on canvas mounted on cardboard continues his attention to people engaged in an activity, bringing the representation of a person together with the work they perform.

This profile brings together identity references for Georg Friedrich Kersting and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
