Rudolf Levy (1875–1944), a German Jewish painter, became friends with Walter Bondy in Munich. They moved to Paris in 1903 and frequented the Café du Dôme, which became a major meeting place for foreign artists in Montparnasse. Levy studied at the Académie Matisse, opened in 1908, and participated in the exchanges of this cosmopolitan artistic community.
Alfred Flechtheim exhibited the Dôme circle in Düsseldorf in 1914; Levy and Bondy later met again in Berlin. His Flower Still Life of 1919 demonstrates his interest in the genre. Fleeing Nazi persecution, he eventually settled in Florence. Arrested in December 1943, he was deported towards Auschwitz in 1944 and did not survive deportation. The Uffizi holds his portrait Fiamma, a work from his final years.
This profile brings together identity references for Rudolf Levy and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
