Josef Albers was among Eva Hesse’s teachers; the Kornfeld catalogue also cites Rico Lebrun. In 1964, she lived and worked with Tom Doyle in a former textile factory in the Kettwig-am-Ruhr region of Germany. During this stay, she made sculptures from rope, electrical wire and masonite, including Eighter from Decatur and Oomamaboomba (1965), whose titles have a playful tone.
On her return to New York, she worked notably with latex, fibreglass and plastics. There she made Hang Up in 1966, a work she considered one of the most important of her career.
In September 1968, Hesse began teaching at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The following year, she took part in the exhibition When Attitudes Become Forms, organised by Harald Szeemann. In 1973, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago presented Eva Hesse Retrospective: A Memorial Exhibition. In 2006, a two-volume catalogue raisonné devoted to her paintings and sculptures was published, edited by Renate Petzinger and Barry Rosen.
This profile brings together identity references for Eva Hesse and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
4 references are documented at Kornfeld. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
