The German painter Richard Müller, who was also an engraver and draughtsman, first trained at the painting school of the Meissen porcelain manufactory before studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1890 to 1892. Ernst Moritz Geyger, Leon Pohle and Leonhard Gey were among his teachers. He took part in the “Dresden Secession” in 1894 and received the Rome Prize in 1897. He was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair in 1899–1900 and received the Austrian State Medal in Vienna in 1912. From 1900, Müller taught at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he remained until 1935; George Grosz was among his students.
The works documented in the sources include “Schweinestall”, an oil painting signed and dated 1931 on the reverse of the stretcher, measuring 30 × 45 cm. The Städel Museum also lists a work titled “Cat with Ball of Wool” in its digital collection. Müller was a member of the Nazi Party from 1933 and helped organise the first “degenerate art” exhibition in Dresden. In 1944, the Reich Ministry included him on the “Gottbegnadeten-Liste”, which brought together artists considered privileged. The museum links his position under the National Socialist regime to the painter’s controversial standing. Born in 1874 in Tschirnitz an der Eger, he died in 1954 in Dresden-Loschwitz.
This profile brings together identity references for Richard Müller and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
