The Flemish painter Jan Baptist Lambrechts, born in Antwerp in 1680, is associated with genre painting, particularly tavern scenes and festive gatherings. His half-brother Jeroom helps him develop his artistic skills and teaches him to paint. In 1703, Lambrechts travels to Lille, then travels for several years.
His scenes often include figures from everyday life: cooks, maids, vegetable sellers, dancing peasants and drinkers. His repertoire also includes a monkey scene depicting a cat being judged by monkeys. Sources highlight the delicacy of his brushwork, the care given to the details of his compositions and his rendering of fabrics.
Works by Lambrechts are held at the Uffizi in Florence and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg; one source also mentions the fine arts museums of Ghent and Carcassonne, as well as the National Museum in Warsaw.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Baptist Lambrechts and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
