Johann Christian Reinhart

Johann Christian Reinhart trained in Leipzig and Dresden before settling in Rome in 1789. He belonged to the city’s circle of German landscape painters, combining observation of nature with an ideal composition informed by Claude Lorrain and Poussin. Drawing played a role in this process: the Städel’s Heroic Landscape, dating from about 1825–1828, combines pen, brush and wash, with a grid for transferring the design.

View from the Villa Malta towards the West, painted in tempera on canvas in 1835, extends his landscape study. Seen from the Pincio, Rome’s rooftops lead the eye towards the Vatican. The painting belongs to a project of panoramic views intended for Munich, although their planned spatial arrangement was never realised.

This profile brings together identity references for Johann Christian Reinhart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
