Elmar Rojas began his career as an architect before devoting himself more fully to painting and sculpture. Trained in Guatemala and Europe, he helped establish the Vértebra group during the 1960s. His painting combines references to Guatemalan culture, social concerns and imagined figures, in an approach that the Museo Ralli relates to magical realism.
The series Torofuego and Los espantapájaros appear in the catalogue of his 1991 exhibition at the Bernheim gallery in Panamá. That same year, Rojas painted Amor de espantapájaros, an oil on canvas in the Ralli collection. The circulation of his work across Latin America is also documented in PUCE’s archives, which hold correspondence concerning exhibitions in Quito and the Cuenca Biennial.
This profile brings together identity references for Elmar Rojas and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
