Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French painter and sculptor whose work encompassed antiquity, history and Orientalist subjects. A pupil of Paul Delaroche, he attracted attention at the Salon of 1847 with Young Greeks Attending a Cockfight, begun the previous year. Smooth surfaces, precise drawing and clear colours characterised his Neo-Greek manner at this stage. His compositions organised action as a meticulously constructed spectacle.
Reproductions of his paintings helped disseminate them across Europe and America. Later in his career, Gérôme also explored polychrome sculpture. Pygmalion and Galatea, painted around 1890 and held by the Metropolitan Museum, shows a statue coming to life. Painted and sculpted variations on this subject connect different viewpoints of the figure and investigate the boundaries between the living body and its representation.
