Richard van Orley

Born : 1663Died : 1732

The Flemish artist Richard van Orley (1663–1732) connected his printmaking practice with a broad narrative repertoire. His prints encompass religious stories, mythology and urban views. In Vertumnus and Pomona, an etching held by the British Museum, the encounter unfolds within a garden of elaborate architecture. Figures and setting work together to construct the space of the story.

Around 1700, he engraved the Fall of the Rebel Angels after Rubens, through an intermediary drawing by Jan van Orley. Such exchanges between painting, drawing and print form a documented part of his activity. He also contributed to the Perspectives des ruines de la ville de Bruxelles of 1695, after Augustin Coppens. Buildings damaged by bombardment thus became subjects for prints preserving a visual memory of the city.

This profile brings together identity references for Richard van Orley and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
