The American painter and etcher Elisha Kent Kane Wetherill was born in Philadelphia in 1874 and died in 1929. His documented work brings landscape into contact with human structures, ranging from shores and bridges to industrial equipment. The 1914 etching Otto Coke and Coal Hoist, held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, provides a firm reference point for his printmaking. Its subject places an installation for handling coal within the visual territory of the etching. Oil paintings on panel depicting a beach at low tide and a bridge reveal a related interest through another medium. Together, these subjects suggest an attention to places where the natural environment and human activity occupy the same field of view.
This profile brings together identity references for Elisha Kent Kane Wetherill and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
