Philipp Röth

Philipp Röth, a German painter born in Darmstadt in 1841 and who died in Munich in 1921, is associated with intimate landscape painting. His depictions of nature focus on seasonal, everyday and meteorological atmospheres, while his later works turn towards Impressionism.
His training began in Darmstadt in 1855 with August Lucas and Karl Ludwig Seeger. From 1859 to 1860, he attended Johann Wilhelm Schirmer’s painting class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. In 1862, he studied again in Darmstadt with Paul Weber, court painter to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, who would become his father-in-law.
Between 1864 and 1870, Röth worked as an independent artist in Düsseldorf, where he absorbed influences from the local painting school. His subsequent career took him to Munich, as well as to Haimhausen and Dachau, where he lived and worked.
