Eric Wilson was born in Annandale, Sydney, in 1911 and trained with teachers including Julian Ashton. A travelling scholarship awarded in 1937 enabled him to leave for London. He attended the Royal Academy schools, followed by the Westminster School and Amédée Ozenfant's academy. A visit to Paris and these studies directed his interests towards the principles of cubism.
Returning to Australia, Wilson helped disseminate these ideas within Sydney's artistic community and taught at institutions including the Julian Ashton School. His urban landscapes accompanied compositions that reconfigured domestic objects as arrangements of shapes, colours and textures. In Abstract – the kitchen stove, painted in 1943, he combined paint, papers, sand and sawdust on plywood. Such material experimentation distinguishes a career cut short by his death in 1946.
This profile brings together identity references for Eric Wilson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
