The French painter Henry Moret, born in Cherbourg in 1856 and deceased in Paris in 1913, made the Breton coastline and its islands recurring subjects. The southern coast of Finistère and Morbihan occupy a central place in his work, alongside Groix, Belle-Île, Houat and Ouessant; he also painted the English Channel and the Netherlands. One characterisation of his painting highlights a tension between Synthetism and Impressionism, two approaches between which Moret does not choose.
After studying with Ernest Coroller, he studied in 1876 at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean-Paul Laurens. He later attended Henri Lehmann’s studio, followed by the Académie Julian. He made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1880 with La Plage de Loqueltaz à marée basse. The following year, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and the Salon des indépendants, then settled in Le Pouldu. He subsequently established his practice in Doëlan, where he worked under contract for the Durand-Ruel gallery. The gallery devoted an exhibition to him in Paris in 1898.
Several works held in public collections attest to the diversity of his coastal landscapes: La Chapelle du Pouldu (1889) is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest, Port Manec’h (1896) in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and Écueils près d’Ouessant (1901) in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His work was the subject of exhibitions at the Musée de Pont-Aven in 1988, and then at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper in 1998 and 2021. A monograph on the painter by Jean-Yves Roland and Marie-Bénédicte Baranger was published by Palantines in 2002.
