SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Franz Priking, a German painter and lithographer, was born in Mülheim in 1929 and died in Oppède in 1979. His birth name is also given in the form Pricking. He developed a style of painting in which objects are outlined by broad black strokes. This approach, which emerged in 1953–1954 after a brief flirtation with Cubism, became a lasting feature of his paintings.
His training took him to the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1948, and then to the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he studied with Max Pechstein from 1948 to 1950. In 1950, he left Germany for Paris, before moving on to Provence and staying in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. He subsequently began working with the art dealer Emmanuel David, a collaboration that continued until 1979.
His exhibitions include a presentation at the Musée Galliera in Paris from January to March 1962, followed by several exhibitions at the Galerie Emmanuel David in 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1974. A retrospective was held at the Château de Val in Lanobre in the summer of 1979. Works held in public collections include Nature morte fond rouge, dated 1965, at the Musée Calvet in Avignon, and Le Château de Val at the castle of the same name. The Fonds communal d’art contemporain de Marseille holds six of his lithographs, including Voilier, Cheval et naïade, Paysage noir et blanc, Nature morte au violon and Bouquet de fleurs.
This profile brings together identity references for Franz Priking and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
30 references are documented at Piguet, Moenius. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
