Adrien Moreau

Born : 1843Died : 1906Documented citizenships : France

The French painter Adrien Moreau, born in Troyes in 1843 and deceased in Paris in 1906, made history painting and evocations of the past the core of his practice. His subjects span a wide range, from medieval scenes to everyday life, as well as portraits of women from high society. He was also interested in animal painting, in which he is described as a “meticulous portraitist of the horse”.

Moreau made his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1868 with a biblical subject, and presented Néron chez les Belluaires there the following year. He received a second-class medal in 1876 and a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. In 1892, he was appointed a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur. Having become a member of the Salon des artistes français, he exhibited there for the last time in 1904, with Arrestation sous la Terreur and La promenade du Roi de Rome à Saint-Cloud.

A fire in 1870, following the explosion of the Luxembourg powder magazine, destroyed part of his studio and resulted in the loss of numerous drawings, sketches and studies. His work also included illustration: in 1885, he worked in particular on Son altesse la femme by Octave Uzanne for Maison Quantin, as well as on works by Voltaire, Balzac and Anatole France, including Mémoires d’un volontaire in 1902. He was also a member of the Société d’aquarellistes français. Works by Moreau are held at the musée des beaux-arts de Troyes, the musée d’Arts de Nantes and the musée des beaux-arts de Carcassonne. Ses poupées japonaises, an oil on canvas dated 1872, is listed as being held at the Widener University Art Museum.
