Born in 1964 in Samtredia and died in 1994 in Tbilisi, Karlo Kacharava was a Georgian artist whose practice brought together art-making, writing and research in art history. After studying art history at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts from 1981 to 1986, he joined the Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art History as a researcher. At the same time, he pursued his artistic activities as part of Tbilisi’s Tenth Floor Group and produced poetic works as well as texts on critical theory. The biographical source puts his output at more than five thousand drawings, magazines and painted canvases.
In his paintings, often connected to his writings, language becomes pictorial material: the textual iconography brings together characters from the Georgian and Latin alphabets. The work entitled “God and Revolutionaries” is a documented example of his works on paper: the catalogue describes it as mixed media, 29 × 41 cm, and notes on the reverse a copy of an excerpt from a catalogue bearing the notation 1990/1993. In 1990, he left the USSR for the first time and stayed briefly in Cologne.
During his lifetime, Kacharava took part in nearly forty exhibitions. In 1997, he was posthumously awarded the Giorgi Chubinashvili State Prize for his contribution to Georgian art history. A retrospective organised by Irena Popiashvili was held at the Georgian National Museum in 2017. His works are held, among other institutions, by the Georgian National Museum, the He Art Museum, the Kolodzei Art Foundation, MARe / Muzeul de Arta Recenta and the Rachofsky Collection. In December 2023, according to the source, S.M.A.K. in Ghent organised the first museum exhibition of his works outside Georgia.
