Presented as a Serbian-Hungarian artist, Pal Homonai was born in 1922 into a farming family in Irig. He spent his childhood in the pastures of the villages of Srem, which the biography devoted to his career identifies as a major source of inspiration. He lived and worked in Novi Sad until 1992, then moved to Kecskemét, where he remained until the end of his life.
His work takes rural life and the façades of old buildings as its subjects. Pastures, wheat fields, fairs, harvests and weddings form a varied repertoire set across the seasons. The biography describes open spaces in which events are often condensed like miniatures. The shift from hills to plains, from striped furrows to dotted furrows, and from human figures to animal figures contributes to the rhythm of the compositions. Listed works include Grazing Horses, dated 1968, Fair, dated 1969, and Horses, Oxen and Young Girls, undated. The Museum of Naive and Marginal Art in Jagodina holds works by the artist, including Grazing Horses and Fair.
His first solo exhibition is recorded at the Đuro Salaj Gallery in Belgrade in 1968; further solo exhibitions are listed in Jagodina, Novi Sad and Subotica in 1969. The group exhibitions mentioned include stops in Stockholm, Lugano and Buenos Aires in 1969, followed by Tokyo and Recklinghausen in 1971. The exhibition list also records London and Paris in 1976, Paris in 1988, Minsk and Morges in 1998, and Tel Aviv in 2005. In 2003, at the 11th International Biennial of Naive and Marginal Art organised by the museum in Jagodina, he received the award for his entire body of work.
