Otto Greis

Born : 1913Died : 2001Documented citizenships : Germany

The German Informel painter Otto Greis was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1913; a biographical notice gives either 28 August or 28 September as his date of birth. After beginning mechanical engineering studies in 1932, he abandoned them in favour of painting; from 1934 to 1938, he attended private painting and drawing classes with Johann Heinrich Höhl at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. He met Ernst Wilhelm Nay in 1945, then visited the second CoBrA exhibition in Liège in October 1951, accompanied by the painter Karl Otto Götz. In December 1952, he took part in the first Quadriga exhibition in Frankfurt.

In the early 1950s, Greis established contacts in Paris, which he visited regularly, before settling in France in the middle of the decade. He returned to Germany in 1984. According to the sales catalogue, Croqueton, an oil painting on canvas measuring 33 × 27 cm, comes from the estate of the Dr Erika Pohl-Ströher Collection and was acquired directly from the artist in Paris in 1961.

This profile brings together identity references for Otto Greis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
