August von Pettenkofen

August von Pettenkofen (1822–1889) was an Austrian painter born in Vienna, where he also died. Initially a portrait and genre painter, he took part in the Hungarian campaign of 1849 as a military artist. Discovering Szolnok had a lasting effect on his work: he returned regularly to study its inhabitants, markets, animals and the landscapes of the Hungarian plain.

Farmyards, village roads, horses beside carts and the wells of the puszta form a recurring repertoire. These subjects combine observation of rural life with growing attention to landscape and atmosphere. His visits helped establish Szolnok as a meeting place for painters. His works are held by institutions including the Belvedere, the Wien Museum and the Leopold Museum.

This profile brings together identity references for August von Pettenkofen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
