Ludwig Andreas Letsch, known as Louis Letsch, was born in 1856 in Wolfurt, in Vorarlberg, and died in Strasbourg in 1940. An Austrian painter who worked in France, he studied painting with Gebhard Flatz in Bregenz. From 1889, he lived and worked in Mulhouse. One source states that he founded the artists’ group “Palette” there. In 1920, he settled in Strasbourg, where he lived until his death.
His work encompasses landscape, still life and flower painting; the sources single out his floral still lifes in particular. Sale records mention, among other works, a still life with roses, painted in oil on canvas and signed lower right, as well as a floral still life from 1890, also in oil on canvas, signed and dated. The latter measures 81 × 58 cm. Landscapes are also represented among the recorded works: one record attributes to Letsch an oil-on-canvas view of the chapel of Saint-Léonard in Lindau-Schachen, while another describes a mountain landscape in oil on panel, signed and with the place indicated.
This profile brings together identity references for Louis Letsch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
