Born in Antwerp, Jacob Ferdinand Voet spent much of his career as a portrait painter in Rome. He worked for the papal circle, Roman aristocrats and English visitors undertaking the Grand Tour. Queen Christina of Sweden and Cardinal Azzolino were among his patrons. His career ended in Paris, where recent museum catalogues place his death in 1689.
The Portrait of Cardinal Carlo Cerri at the National Gallery, painted between 1669 and 1679, combines the sitter’s presence with specific indications of his position. Seated in a red velvet chair, the cardinal holds his biretta; the legal books behind him allow his identity to be established. The portrait of Thomas Burnet, dated 1675 and held by the National Portrait Gallery, also documents Voet’s British clientele.
This profile brings together identity references for Jacob Ferdinand Voet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
