Ivan Kliun participated in the Russian avant-garde by exploring relationships between painting, relief and sculpture. Close to Malevich, he pursued Cubist and Futurist experiments before adopting Suprematism. In Composition, painted in 1917 and preserved at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, geometry supports an investigation of luminous effects, colour and texture within the painted image.
An untitled work at MOMus, dating from around 1917, combines watercolour, ink and pencil on paper. Transparent coloured shapes overlap inside a square, altering their contours and relationships. With Red Light, in the early 1920s, Kliun addressed another problem: making light radiate from a central source. The painting belongs to Cosmic Images, a series in which pictorial construction meets an interest in the phenomena of the universe.
