The French painter, lithographer and composer Roger Lersy pursues an artistic practice in which painting and music each occupy an important place. Born in Paris in 1920, he dies in Orsay in 2004. After completing his schooling, he studies for three years at the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré in Paris, then works as a decorator. From 1950 to 1954, he also pursues advanced musical studies with Noël Gallon.
In his painting, landscapes, interiors and still lifes are the principal subjects. Lersy interprets them through a personal figurative approach, while also being drawn to abstract expression without renouncing reality. Inondations, an oil on canvas from 1955 held at the Musée Cantini in Marseille, bears witness to his work in painting. His practice of lithography is represented in particular by Le Pavot, an original lithograph from 1978 listed in the collection of the Cabinet des estampes at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
His work also extends to pieces intended for public spaces. Réveillon, a tapestry made by the Manufacture des Gobelins, is listed at the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in New York; in 1972, Lersy creates 29 stained-glass windows for the church of Saint-Laurent in Longlaville. His work as a composer includes Trois pièces pour deux ondes Martenot, published by A. Leduc in 1979, as well as Cinq préludes pour piano et saxophone alto, premiered at the Flâneries musicales de Reims in 1993.
Lersy presents his first exhibition at the Galerie Bourdon in Paris in 1946. He subsequently exhibits at the International Arts Galeries in Chicago in February–March 1962. A retrospective of his work is held at the Galerie Florence Basset in Flassans-sur-Issole from March to May 2003. A monograph on the artist by J. F. Chabrun is published by Éditions Motte in Geneva in 1961.
