Abraham van Calraet (1642–1722) was born and died in Dordrecht, where he spent most of his career. A painter of landscapes and still lifes, he knew Aelbert Cuyp’s art closely. Similarities between their paintings, compounded by their shared initials “AC”, long complicated attribution. Abraham’s possible training with Cuyp remains uncertain and should not be confused with that of his brother Barent.
His landscapes populated by horses and cattle also show the influence of Jan Both and Philips Wouwerman. He painted stable interiors and winter scenes, including a view of people on the ice outside Dordrecht now in the National Gallery. Still life forms another important strand of his work: fruit, flowers and insects are rendered with meticulous attention to surfaces and detail.
This profile brings together identity references for Abraham van Calraet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
