Karl Einhart

Born : 1884Died : 1967Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter Karl Einhart, born and deceased in Constance, devoted a significant part of his work to the landscapes of Lake Constance and its region. By his own estimate, he produced more than a thousand oil paintings as well as hundreds of watercolours and drawings; alongside landscapes, his work includes portraits, nudes, genre scenes, still lifes and interiors. His palette, initially dominated by dark, earthy tones, became lighter and more colourful in his later works. Until an advanced age, he painted views over water and the landscapes of his homeland.

His training took him from the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe, where he studied from 1900 to 1903, to the Grand Ducal Academy of Fine Arts in Baden, where he studied from 1904 to 1908. Ludwig Schmid-Reutte, Caspar Ritter, Wilhelm Trübner and Ernst Schurth were among his teachers. In 1910 and 1911, he continued his studies at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Charlottenburg, where Julius Ehrentraut was one of his professors. From 1911, Einhart worked as an independent artist and began exhibiting publicly. That year, he held his first solo exhibition in Constance, followed in 1916 by another at the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie.

His work was not limited to painting. During the First World War, he designed twelve cover illustrations for the «Zeitbücher» published by Reuß & Itta, including one for Hermann Hesse’s story Am Weg. From 1916, he also regularly supplied vignettes, calendar drawings and small illustrations for books about Lake Constance published by the same publisher. In Constance, he also undertook decorative commissions: a ceiling painting in the entrance hall at 18 Hussenstraße in 1921, followed by the decoration of the two oriels of the corner building of the Hindenburgblock in 1927. Regional artistic life formed another aspect of his career. A founding member of the Expressionist association «Breidablik» in 1919, he later joined the «Künstlerbund Bodensee» in 1921 and the «Neue Malergruppe am See» in 1923. In 1925, together with Norbert Jacques, he founded the cross-border association «Der Kreis», which brought together more than 36 members around Lake Constance and organised more than thirty exhibitions before ceasing to exist in 1937.

The solo exhibitions at the Wessenberg-Haus in Constance mark several stages in his career, notably in 1954, for his 70th birthday, and in 1964, for his 80th birthday. In 1954, he also took part in «Neue Deutsche Kunst am Bodensee (Malerei und Plastik)» at the Museum Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen. In 2017, the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie devoted the exhibition «Dem See treu. Karl Einhart (1884–1967) und seine Weggefährten» to him. The Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie holds, among other works, a still life from 1927, painted in oil on canvas and measuring 70 × 97.5 cm, as well as the Bildnis Norbert Jacques, dated 1940.
