The German painter and photographer Max Peiffer Watenphul was born in Weferlingen in 1896. After studying law, he decided in 1919 to devote himself to painting, then studied at the Bauhaus. In Weimar, Walter Gropius enabled him to work in all the workshops.
After an initial trip to Italy in 1921, he crossed the Atlantic in 1924, via Cuba, to Mexico, where he stayed for about a year. To earn a living, he gave painting lessons there and designed stage sets as well as posters. His interest in Mexican popular painting accompanied the creation of large-scale landscapes in expressive colours.
Dated 1924, Mexico City, La Sirena is an oil on canvas measuring 68 × 96 cm, monogrammed “M.P.W.” at the upper right. According to the description of the work, the façade of La Sirena — probably an entertainment venue in the old town of Mexico City — stands out in blue against an otherwise grey background. The canvas is included in the first volume of the catalogue raisonné by Grace Watenphul Pasqualucci and Alessandra Pasqualucci, devoted to paintings and watercolours, published in Cologne in 1989 under number G 0068. It is also listed as number 22 in the catalogue of the exhibition Max Peiffer Watenphul, Ein bemerkenswert unangepasster Bauhaus-Schüler, Werke von 1915 bis 1960, presented by Galerie Henze & Ketterer in Wichtrach, near Bern, in 2008.
This profile brings together identity references for Max Peiffer Watenphul and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
11 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, Kornfeld, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
