Max Kaus

Born : 1891Died : 1977Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter Max Kaus was born and died in Berlin. He also worked as a graphic artist, printmaker and lithographer. His practice is thus documented through both painting and printmaking. From 1920 to 1922, he spent the summer months on the island of Hiddensee, in a house facing the Baltic Sea.

His lithographic work is particularly associated with a series made in 1919 for Die Sage von Sankt Julian dem Gastfreien, documented by Wolfgang Maier-Preusker in a book published in Vienna in 2005. In 1974, the Brücke-Museum in Berlin devoted an exhibition to his early graphic work, in connection with the Sammlung Buchheim; a 36-page catalogue accompanied it.

The reception of his work was also accompanied by publications: in 1971, for the artist’s 80th birthday, the Brücke-Museum published a book by Leopold Reidemeister devoted to his paintings from 1917 to 1970; Christine Knupp devoted a book to him in 1973. Another exhibition at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin brought together works dated from 1918 to 1976, from private collections in Berlin. Kaus received the Berliner Kunstpreis in 1963.

This profile brings together identity references for Max Kaus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
