Nicolas Lancret

Born : 1690Died : 1743

Nicolas Lancret (1690–1743), born and deceased in Paris, trained in Pierre Dulin’s studio and subsequently with Claude Gillot. Following Watteau, he painted scenes of sociability and entertainment, including village weddings, balls and fairs. Committed to working from nature, he regularly drew from live models. He exhibited on the Place Dauphine during the 1720s and at the Salon between 1737 and 1742. For the king, he produced series devoted to subjects including the seasons and the ages of life. Le Déjeuner de jambon, dated 1735, is held by the Musée Condé in Chantilly. The Louvre owns La Leçon de flûte, also known as Le maître galant, from 1743.
