Born in Madrid in 1929, Luis Feito López, known as Luis Feito, developed his painting from early figurative elements through a Cubist period and then towards abstraction, particularly lyrical abstraction. After studying at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando from 1950 to 1954, he became a professor there that same year, before moving to Paris in 1956; he was also a founding member of the Madrid-based group El Paso, established in 1957.
In his abstract work, colour engages with smooth, contrasting surfaces and a materiality sometimes laden with sand; at the beginning of this period, black, ochre and white dominated his palette. From the 1960s onwards, he progressively simplified his compositions and reduced the use of material, while the circle became a predominant form within them. Sources link the circular forms and the appearance of broad black bands to his interest in Japanese art. After Paris, he left the city for Montréal in 1981, then settled in New York in 1983, where he stayed until the early 1990s.
His exhibition history includes several participations in the Venice Biennale—in 1956, 1958, 1960 and 1968—as well as the 1957 and 1963 São Paulo Biennials and documenta in Kassel in 1959. Retrospectives were devoted to him at Galerie Arnaud in Paris in 1961, the Musée de Hambourg in 1964, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in 1968, the MEAC in Madrid in 1988 and the Museo Reina Sofía in 1998. His works are listed in museum collections in New York, notably at the Guggenheim Museum, as well as at the Musée national d’art moderne and the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, among others. The bibliography on the artist includes, in particular, the catalogue Del rojo al negro, published in 1968, and Juan Manuel Bonet’s book Feito, published in Madrid in 2002.
This profile brings together identity references for Luis Feito and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
