The French painter Pierre Hodé (1889–1942), who was active in the first half of the 20th century and was born Georges Pierre Théodule Ducenne, adopted an artist’s name derived from that of his maternal grandfather. According to Gérald Schurr, his landscapes and still lifes are distinguished by a rigorous structure and a personal approach to Cubism, which he explored through Realism. Theatre set design provided another field for this exploration: Schurr describes him as the creator of a “synthetic theatre”, in which cubes and simple volumes, animated by modulated lighting, shape the stage space.
In Rouen, he obtained his primary school certificate at the Franklin school in 1901. Before devoting himself fully to painting, he worked as a clerk at the port and then as a civil servant at the prefecture of Seine-Inférieure. His first trip to London was in 1907; he returned there regularly until 1939. His first exhibition in Rouen took place in 1913. He later moved to Paris, where he lodged with Pierre Dumont at the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre. In 1922, he took the initiative to organise a French art section as part of the First International Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf. In 1924, health reasons and financial constraints led him to manage the Café de Paris in Honfleur for six months. He created frescoes there, as well as at the Hôtel du Cheval blanc; today, they are known only through postcards. From 1931 to 1937, he curtailed his painting activity to devote himself to theatre set design.
Several works are held in French museums: Remorqueurs à Conflans-Sainte-Honorine at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Le Port de Dieppe, dated 1933, at the museum in Calais, and Portrait du boxeur Fred Bretonnel, dated 1925, at the Musée de la Faïence et des Beaux-Arts de Nevers. In 1987, the Musée Eugène-Boudin in Honfleur paid tribute to him with an exhibition bringing together sixty works. A monograph on the painter by François Lespinasse was published in 2014.
This profile brings together identity references for Pierre Hodé and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
