Lothar Quinte

Born : 1923Died : 2000Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter Lothar Quinte, born in 1923 and deceased in 2000, developed a body of work that took shape in painting before extending to projects for architecture and the performing arts. After completing an apprenticeship as a painter in Leipzig from 1937 to 1941, he attended the Kloster Bernsteinschule art school from 1946 to 1951, where he studied first under Hans Ludwig Pfeiffer and then under HAP Grieshaber. In 1957, he became a member of the Association of German Artists.

His areas of exploration include the Fächerbilder and Schlitzbilder: these works generally feature a pronounced area of compression, where a prismatic or chromatic gradation is described as vibrating. From 1961, Helgard Rottloff helped bring his work to wider attention through exhibitions. Quinte settled in Wintzenbach, Alsace, where he established a studio. In 1975, following an artistic crisis, he undertook a six-month journey, with India and Egypt mentioned as its principal destinations.

His works include a three-part west window for Lübeck Cathedral in 1964, a mural designed for the Bonn City Theatre in 1965 and an iron curtain designed for the Marburg Theatre in 1969. In 1974, he created the 11 × 11 m Corona tapestry series, as well as an iron curtain for the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe. A rainbow wall was realised in 1977 in the spectral hall of the Stuttgart Planetarium, based on his design. In 2000, he made the stained-glass windows for the chapel in Champenay, Alsace, presented in the source as his final work.

His career was marked by distinctions: the Youth Art Prize in 1953, the Junger Westen Prize in 1956 and the second Burda Prize for Painting in 1965. He went on to receive the Silesian Cultural Prize of the State of Lower Saxony in 1993, was appointed Professor h. c. of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 1995, and received the Lovis Corinth Prize in 1997. The bibliography lists three OPUS volumes published by Chorus: two devoted to paintings from 1950 to 2000, edited by Gert Reising and Peter Iden, and a third on art in public space from the same period, attributed to Gert Reising and Wolfgang Wiethaup.
